I am lucky in that my older children can be trusted to make the cards for everyone, and that will save a lot of money, but I still need to come up with the presents. All three of these ladies have very different tastes. My mother loves jewelry. Rings, necklaces, and bracelets are all things that she enjoys. My aunt, on the other hand, likes nicknacks, with an emphasis on anything with a butterfly motif. My wife is more of a tomboy, and does not wear a lot of jewelry or want a lot of nicknacks. Just the same, I know that she has wanted something to commemorate each of her children, and while looking online, I think I found just the right thing.

For my wife, I will get a simple ring, with the birthstones of each of our children encrusted on the surface. It is simple enough that she will love it, and meaningful enough that she will always cherish it.

For my mother, I plan to buy a ladder necklace that has a plate for all of the names of her grandchildren. That will include my five and the two that my sister have, and while that will make for a long ladder, I think she will really enjoy it and enjoy wearing it when she wants to show off her posterity to her friends.

For my aunt, I think I will get a charm bracelet with a butterfly charm for each of her grandchildren. She has three of her own, and I think she will really like the fusion of ideas between her favorite motif and her favorite people. My children will make all of the cards, I will order the rest online, and everything will be ready well in advance of Mother’s Day.

I have began to worry about my sanity, and being friends with the chaplain at the state mental hospital, I have taken time to sit with him and discuss some of my dilemma.  His advice has been timely, and has assured me that while I am under a lot of stress, my mind and stability are intact.  Right now it is more important to reclaim some of what might be considered psychological lost ground before I let myself be any more overwhelmed than I already feel that I am.  We discussed several options aimed at getting me out of my current life for a while and allowing me some time to regroup and come back fighting.  The recommendation that caught my interest the most was to spend some time in a local spa in Boston.

Tricks for Getting a Baby to Sleep

Babies like to be kept confined during their first couple of weeks.  The age-old tradition of swaddling is a wonderful trick.  Get a larger-than-usual baby blanket, (you can even buy swaddle blankets online or at children’s boutiques), lay the baby in the center, fold over the right side and then the left, snuggly and securely.  Tuck the folds under the baby, keeping their little hands straight to their sides.  No movement is best.  Bring up the bottom flap and you have yourself a burrito baby who is happy and content, hopefully.  Another trick is to hold the baby against your arm with their head looking outward over your arm.  This puts pressure on their tummy, which helps if they have colic or other indigestion.  A warm bath before bedtime and avoiding late evening naps also can be helpful. Snuggle, walk, rock, feed, change and hope for the best.  Swaddle blankets are the number one trick to help a fussy, non-sleeping baby rest so everyone can get good nights sleep.

There are many things in our society that are unspoken, but which speak loud and clear in the message that they send.
